Introduction
This will help you solve simple IT problems step by step.
1. Is the Computer Turning On?
Check:
- Is the computer plugged into the wall?
- Is the power button pressed?
What to do:
- Look for a button with a circle and line (⏻). Press it once.
- If nothing happens, check the power cord is firmly plugged in at both ends.
Still not working?
- Try plugging it into a different outlet.
- Make sure the monitor (screen) is also turned on (some have their own power button).
2. Is the Screen Blank?
Check:
- Is the monitor turned on?
- Is the cable connecting the computer to the monitor plugged in tightly?
What to do:
- Look for a small light on the monitor. If it’s off, press the monitor's power button.
- If the light is on but you see nothing, gently check the cable between the monitor and computer.
3. Is the Mouse or Keyboard Not Working?
Check:
- Are the mouse and keyboard plugged in (usually into USB ports)?
- If they are wireless, do they have batteries?
What to do:
- Unplug and replug the devices into different USB ports (rectangular holes).
- Replace or recharge batteries in wireless devices.
4. Is the Computer Frozen (Not Responding)?
Check:
- Is the screen stuck or not changing?
- Are keyboard or mouse clicks doing nothing?
What to do:
- If nothing happens, hold the power button for 5–10 seconds until the computer shuts off.
- Wait a few seconds, then turn it back on.
5. Are You Having Trouble with the Internet?
Check:
- Is the Wi-Fi or internet cable connected?
- Do you see a little globe or Wi-Fi icon with an "X" on it?
What to do:
- If you're using Wi-Fi, try restarting your router (unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in).
- Make sure the modem and router have power and are showing lights.
Helpful Tips
- Restarting the computer fixes many small problems. Try turning it off and on.
- If you're unsure, write down what you see or take a picture to ask someone for help.
- Don’t worry—you won’t break anything by checking wires or restarting.
