How to Install Windows Updates & Turn on Automatic Updates

Part 1: How to Install Windows Updates

1. Open Settings

  • Click the Start menu (Windows logo in the bottom-left corner).

  • Select Settings (gear icon).

2. Go to Windows Update

  • In the Settings window, click "Update & Security" (for Windows 10)
    or "Windows Update" (for Windows 11).

3. Check for Updates

  • Click the "Check for updates" button.

  • Windows will look for available updates.

4. Install Updates

  • If updates are found, they will begin downloading.

  • Click "Install now" if needed.

5. Restart Your Computer

  • After installation, click "Restart now" if Windows asks you to.


Part 2: How to Turn On Automatic Updates

Windows 10 and 11 usually have automatic updates turned on by default. Here’s how to make sure:

1. Open Settings

  • Click the Start menu and open Settings.

2. Go to Windows Update

  • Select "Update & Security" (Windows 10)
    or "Windows Update" (Windows 11).

3. Check Update Settings

  • Make sure it says "You're up to date".

  • Click "Advanced options".

4. Ensure Automatic Updates Are On

  • Look for options like "Receive updates automatically" or "Automatically download updates".

  • Make sure these are turned on.


Tips

  • Keep your computer plugged in and connected to the internet when possible.

  • Automatic updates usually install in the background.

  • You can pause updates if needed, but remember to turn them back on later.
